Mexico – Carissa Johnson
Mexico offers the inquisitive and sophisticated traveller the opportunity of authentic experiences with world class cultural, wildlife, natural, active and luxury travel experiences. I discovered a sensational destination that is more traveller friendly, affordable and closer than you may think. Mexico makes for the perfect holiday, also an easy extension from the USA, Cuba, the Caribbean or Central America.
Mexico City was a delightful surprise exceeding my expectations. Now the foodie capital of Mexico, they have their first Michelin star and one of the world’s best restaurants. On Roma especially there are some great new restaurants and hip small bars. With the historic downtown area, Polenko for foodies and shoppers, some great museums and archaeological sites close by, Mexico city itself is worthy of a visit.
From Mexico City we headed south to the colonial towns of Puebla, Oaxaca and San Cristobal de las Casas. These places were all interesting in their own right and we could combine to various itineraries. The roof top restaurants, fine Mescal and dance classes in the town square in Oaxaca, to cobbled streets, great coffee and live music in easy going San Cristobal, these towns are completely charming and easy to navigate.
A highlight was a very special afterhours visit to the jungle ruins of Palenque, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Mexico. To be at a huge site without other tourists and late in the day when the heat is more bearable was worth the fee. Our amazing guide painted a great picture about how it would have been to live in the time of the Mayans and their incredible achievements.
From Chiapas, I flew to Merida to visit the unique Haciendas, fascinating archaeological site of Uxmal and visit to a natural Cenote for a refreshing swim, perfect in the heat.
For Sunrise, I had the most amazing experience to see Chichen Itza before it opened to the public. As I stood in front of the most famous site in Mexico, I was reminded how important the right tour company is with the right connections and guides. To take photos without any other tourists and marvel at these magnificent temples of the classic Mayan period uninterrupted was incredible.
My wonderful trip to Mexico finished up on the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of the magical Caribbean. Vising Tulum, Playa Del Carmen and Riviera Maya was the perfect way to relax after my Mexican adventure.
